2017: A Positive 12 Month Cycle for Industrial Manufacturing Companies

Although it is natural for any company to have its ups and downs, especially with the unknowns that 2017 brought with a new president-elect, this year came in on the record as a prevalently positive 12-month cycle. We kicked off the year in discussion of the positive impacts throughout the HVAC industry, but bigger topics like the election, the new IATF standards in automotive, and developing skilled workers through apprenticeships and STEM education took initiative.

In transportation, ISO standards for high-quality, safety, reliability, and environmentally friendly efforts are no longer the guideline. By the end of 2018, the industry will now abide by the International Automotive Task Force or IATF. The goal is to improve quality management, address defect prevention, and reduce waste beyond the capabilities of 2017. Companies will have one shot to make the transition, during an audit held during the time of the company’s regularly scheduled surveillance or recertification audit. Risk mitigation is also a prominent part of the new standard and will help to lessen the chances of vehicle/system failure.

At Perfection, we’re excited for the transition to take place, as it also gives us a chance to further rise to our customer’s needs.  Industrial automotive requirements now require strict control of the quantity of residual contamination on the components supplied.  Two specified factors now apply, those being “Qualitative Requirements” and “Quantitative Limits.” These standards are becoming the “new norm” demanded by OEMs and the Tier 1’s whom supply parts for sensitive subsystem parts used in automotive electronics, fuel systems, and transmissions. To accommodate these changes, we are excited to have added new testing equipment and are anxiously awaiting the installation of a new “Technical Parts Washing System”.  Our enhanced wash capabilities will allow us to meet upgraded ISO 16232 cleanliness requirements. These two pieces of equipment will push our capabilities to the next level of automotive cleanliness standards.

With 2018 quickly approaching, manufacturing leaders have also been keeping an eye on the new administration’s effect on the economy and industry. Updates are in place from as recent as November 2017. With the pass of the new tax reform, businesses like Perfection will get a jumpstart in the field. Money once put forth towards taxes can now officially be invested into options like equipment, cleaning systems (as mentioned above), general reinvestment within U.S. manufacturing, the economy at large, and standards like the IATF.

With big changes in the industry, there will be room for job growth too. As a result, we hope to continue to see an increase in STEM education, a growing interest in the manufacturing field, and consequently more placement. New equipment that is being invested in will need new operators to oversee the thorough running of functions. This is why apprenticeship programs, like we have at Perfection, are more important today than ever before — given the field’s labor shortages. With a skilled team of professionals, including those involved in the apprenticeship programs, we’re excited to witness industry changes like discontinuation of sector myths as the new reform begins to reflect in numbers.

How the New Administration is Impacting the Manufacturing Industry

With any administration change comes the effect of policies and procedures. As we’re rounding the first 12 months in office, what affect has the Trump administration had on the manufacturing industry so far?

President Trump was elected in part by selling the public on his pro-American manufacturing and bringing jobs back home. As of now, it appears that his stance and the deregulation on manufacturing is showing positive impact across the industry. While fifteen of eighteen sectors have shown growth over the last six months, one of the best indicators is how respondents have answered questions on the National Association of Manufacturers’ (NAM) quarterly survey.

When comparing quarterly surveys from the third quarter in 2016 to the first quarter in 2017, there are significant differences. Respondents on the former survey said, “Unfavorable business climate” (which includes taxes and regulations) were their primary concern. By the time of the latter survey, the respondents had dropped that same category to third on their list of issues they were concerned about. This trend seems to have impacted all of the industry, which understands not only President Trump’s concern with the U.S. economy, but also with his dedication to the growth of American manufacturing.

Another interesting point that can be taken from the survey is that respondents reported feeling more optimistic than ever. In the survey’s 20 years, the rate of optimism has never been higher, coming in at 93.3%. Add to the optimism the fewer reviews by the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) and it is plain to see why this administration has been so popular with many in the manufacturing industry. President Trump has also been quoted as saying he would like to get rid of 75% of government regulations, many of which impact the manufacturing industry.

Perfection Spring & Stamping Corp. is optimistic about the results of the quarterly surveys and hope we will continue to see positive effects from the new administration throughout the industry.

Furthermore, we have seen a large movement to bring work back to the USA. Companies, such as Walmart, have pledged to purchase American-made. This reshoring movement has started to trickle its way through the various markets. In fact, we at Perfection have seen a noteworthy amount of RFQ’s with either special request to be certified “made in USA” along with some opportunities that were simply about bringing the work back.  As a USA manufacturer, we are happy to see the shift and opportunity to grow.

At Perfection, we’ve been specializing in metal forming of high volume custom progressive stampings, fourslide parts, coiled springs, wireforms, and mechanical assemblies for global OEMs for over 60 years.

We are your one stop shop for initial design through finished product, specializing in production volume for a wide range of industries, including: automotive, computer, consumer electronics, construction, medical, garage, home and garden, home office, HVAC, power supplies, plumbing, toys, solar, clean energy, wind, and more.

Perfection Invests in Cleanliness for the Future

Automotive Cleanliness Standards

Vehicles are becoming much more than a means to get from point A to B.

Rather, they have become a safety shield for its passengers, designed and outfitted with the most advanced of technology to make the end user’s experience safe and luxurious.

With that in mind, in electronic modules and the subcomponents of electrical all must be very clean in order to function properly and prevent circuits from shorting.  Therefore, it is only logical that the zero defect requirement will be a given standard as the industry evolves with hybrid, electric vehicles and the possibility of autonomous vehicles in the near future.

Automotive industrial requirements such as VDA 19 and ISO 16232 now require strict control of the quantity of residual contamination on the components supplied.  Two specified factors now apply, those being “Qualitative Requirements” (Contamination by measuring mg/component through Gravimetric analysis), and “Quantitative Limits” (The measure of quantity, size and type of participles, defined by metallic and non-metallic organics). These standards are becoming the “new norm” demanded by OEMs and the Tier 1’s whom supply parts for sensitive subsystem parts used in automotive electronics, fuel systems, transmissions, etc.

Current Cleanliness at Perfection Spring & Stamping Corp.

Cleaning

The VDA requirements allow for four methods to clean parts, including Shaking, Ultrasonic Cleaning, Spraying (Pressure washing), or Flushing.  As a supplier to the Automotive Market, our current state of technical cleaning here at PSS is achieved by “Spraying”, utilizing a three-stage aqueous process followed by heated forced air dryer. We have an enhanced wash process that uses de-ionized water in the final rinse and a unique recipe to achieve superior results.   Though this process was once the “first of its kind” to meet and exceed customer’s needs, the time has come to change and adapt as these requirements are becoming more stringent.

In order to rise to our customers growing needs and the new industrial standard(s), we are actively exploring and determining how the manufacturing process, including the wash process, can be modified. We are confident that the future wash system, to be complete in 2018, shall be capable of meeting and exceeding cleanliness requirements for the foreseeable future.

Testing

In the meantime, we are excited to announce that we have purchased and installed new testing equipment that will be able to verify our cleanliness! The test microscope and computer system is a GT-Vision Filtrex.

Not only will we be able to report to the International Standards, but as well as particular Customer Specific Requirements. The system shall be invaluable for rapid development of future cleaning protocols.

Raw Materials Trend Upwards

Coming out of a relative period of stability, the cost of most raw materials have taken a noteworthy turn upwards. From aluminum to copper to iron ore, source materials for manufacturing are trending upwards. For instance, since January of this year, the cost of a pound of aluminum has gone from around 75 cents up to about 90 cents. This may not sound like much, but from a big-picture point of view, these numbers can be staggering.

For example, with a $0.05/lb increase on a part that weighs 0.5 lbs for a part with an annual volume of 5,000,000 pcs/yr, that increase of 5 cents will add up to an astounding $125,000 for the year! And that would just be for one part! At Perfection Spring & Stamping Corp. we manufacture thousands of different parts, for a wide variety of customers.

As you can see by this example, the rise of raw material costs can greatly impact the cost of our customer’s custom metal components. Therefore, we keep a diligent eye on these trends. When we see things heading up, we are quick to notify and work with our customers to see how we can best keep their costs down. For example, sometimes we get approvals to purchase larger quantities of material at the lower cost.

As a proverbial one-stop-shop for design to finished product and mass production of precision metal-formed components, Perfection retains a healthy clip regardless of changing market conditions. Indeed, therein lies a secret to our success, namely “The Perfection Advantage” of exploiting economies of scale with production volumes anywhere from 100,000 pieces to countless millions of specialized stampings, fourslide parts, coiled springs, wireforms and mechanical assemblies for customers spanning the globe! Our incredible attention to detail and focus on quality control benefits a myriad of industries such as auto, computers, consumer electronics, construction, medical, home and garden, HVAC, plumbing, toys, solar, clean energy, and more!

Perfection Spring and Stamping Celebrates National Safety Month

While the team at Perfection Spring and Stamping is excited to celebrate National Safety Month this June, we’re dedicated to safety year-round, employing stringent measures throughout our facility and processes to ensure our staff remains as safe as possible.

In honor of this year’s National Safety Month, we encourage all our clients to take this time to review their own safety practices. Created by the National Safety Council, National Safety Month aims to shed light on important industrial safety issues and guidelines. Throughout June, they’ll be providing comprehensive educational safety materials, including fact checks and safety guides, to help manufacturers better ensure safety for their employees.

This year’s National Safety Month will focus on a different theme each week: Week one is “Stand Up to Falls;” week two is “Recharge to be in Charge,” focusing on eliminating fatigue; week three is “Prepare for Active Shooters;” and week four is “Don’t Just Sit There,” focusing on the often overlooked issue of ergonomics.

Safety at Perfection Spring

Safety hazards are inevitable in manufacturing settings, but that doesn’t mean workspaces must be dangerous for staff members. Since our founding in 1955, we’ve made the safety of our team our first priority, reflected in our mission statement.

In our facilities, fire safety and hazardous material safety are especially important. To keep our employees safe in the event of fire, our Safety Director holds fire safety training sessions regularly throughout the year. Active and participation-based, these training sessions ensure that our staff knows the location of fire extinguishers and emergency exits, what to do in the event of a fire emergency, and precautionary measures to take in order to reduce fire risks.

Our staff is also regularly trained in hazardous material handling. We employ the United Nations-developed Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of chemical classification and labeling to make sure our entire staff knows exactly what material they are handling. They are also regularly trained in the proper handling procedures and personal protection equipment required for hazardous materials used at our facilities.

Ensuring Safety at Your Facilities

We put a great deal of emphasis on safety at Perfection Spring & Stamping — not just during National Safety Month but 365 days a year. We also urge all of our customers, regardless of industry, to do the same.

We work with companies in the large appliance, automotive, consumer electronics, medical, HVAC, and energy industries, as well as countless others — each of which faces unique safety issues. We understand that it can be easy to grow comfortable with your procedures as they are; we also understand that this is when accidents are most likely to occur. National Safety Month is the ideal time to brush up on your safety measures, ensuring that your employees are, and remain, as safe as possible.

It’s Laundry Season & Perfection is Here to Supply the Parts You Need

Summer is Here (and so is Your Laundry Pile!):

With the warm weather here, spring sports and activity participation are in full swing! Get ready for summer sweat and dirt to make way to clothing. From those involved in sports leagues to just innocent play-time in the yard/at the park, one thing is for certain: slips, slides, and celebrations will stain and dirty your clothes and uniforms.

Therefore, it is no coincidence that the volume of laundry is also continuing to rise! Focus groups and forums across the country claim active youth can produce up to 16 pounds of laundry each week. Add to it the rigor of team and solo sports and the count can skew towards the 18 pounds range.  This equates to about 12 hours of active run time per week, per washing machine.

What This Means for Manufacturers:

Like other home appliances, a washing machine is comprised of many moving parts and precise, well-calibrated interactions between them. They just so happen to also be more susceptible to wear and tear due to their rotary motion for prolonged periods of time to warrant good cleaning. Plus, many pieces are in constant contact with corrosion-causing water!

The custom components that go into putting together an effective washing machine have to be perfectly cast, treated to prevent rust and made of material that doesn’t expand or chip due to continued use.

The combination of summer, sports activities, uncountable laundry loads, and traditional washing machine wear and tear means industry leaders need to partner with suppliers who know their craft and can produce parts that will withstand the test of time.

Perfection Spring & Stamping Corp.:

A global supplier since 1955, Perfection has been creating custom metal products for a myriad of industries including appliances such as washing machines.  We have served the appliance industry continuously since 1960 with a steady stream of metal stampings, springs, wireforms and assemblies to help keep you and your clothes looking good!

We employ four slide forming technique that is used to manufacture relatively small, robust and complex stampings and wireforms. Our progressive die stamping outputs find a place of pride in many electrical and mechanical applications. Finally, many of our springs and wireforms can be found working hard to keep several appliances and other machines running smoothly and for many, many cycles.

Perfection offers more than a “part.” It stands for the promise of service, security and engineering excellence.

Go Green with Smart Technology on Earth Day (and Beyond)

Earth Day is coming up on April 22, 2017. The annual event serves as a great reminder to care for the Earth, especially with issues such as pollution and climate change at an all-time high. Here at Perfection Spring & Stamping (PSS), we support green initiatives, such as Earth Day, by providing custom metal parts for smart technologies.

Our Smart Tech Applications

An exciting part of our work at PSS is making a difference for our customers and the Earth as a whole. We produce high-quality progressive metal parts for green technologies such as energy-efficient smart appliances like thermostats that reduce energy costs.

We also supply coiled springs, progressive stampings, and other parts for companies constructing eco-friendly HVAC systems that keep homes and buildings cool in the summer and warm in winter months without over expending energy as with traditional systems.

Benefits of Smart HVAC Systems

We have seen a rise in the number of parts we supply to companies crafting smart HVAC systems. Green HVACs are becoming a “must have” in many smart homes and buildings where they save energy using environmental sensor technologies. These sensors can tell you the condition of the parts in it, if a repair is necessary, and remind you to schedule routine maintenance.

More buildings across the U.S. are also upgrading to a single point of control for mechanical systems, from lights to water and heat. Having only one control panel simplifies building owners’ abilities to monitor the energy usage of green HVAC systems and other units containing our well-engineered parts.

Supporting Earth Day and Go Green Initiatives

At Perfection, we are proud to support Earth Day by manufacturing custom metal stampings, wire forms, fourslide parts, and mechanical assemblies for companies who provide smart technologies. We serve a range of markets, from electronics, appliance, and HVAC to telecommunications, power supply & utilities, marine, consumer products, and more.

For example, one of our customers, Love Bottle, is the supplier of reusable, swing-top, water bottles. It is part of their mission to reduce plastic waste/ single use water bottle pollution. As their supplier, we have worked with Love Bottle to not only manufacture a reliable swing top, but also have incorporated a recycling program with returnable packaging to continue to reduce waste wherever possible.

Additionally, we are certified to ISO 14001:2004 standards confirming our Environmental Management System is to world class standards, as our company works hard to be a good steward to our shared environment.

Going green is a way of life beyond the month of April, and our team recognizes that raising awareness about energy efficient actions is vital to improving our planet for generations to come. To find out more about manufacturing trends and PSS updates, connect with us via our blog, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

Deadline Nears as Automotive Industry Replaces ISO/TS to IATF Standards

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has long been a road map for companies like Perfection Spring & Stamping, who are interested in providing products that are reliable, safe, and of high quality. Purchasing a product from a company like ours, that adheres to ISO standards, means the customer knows they are getting a product that has met rigid standards when it comes to minimizing waste, creating fair global trade, and that are manufactured in a socially and environmentally friendly way.

When it comes to the automotive industry, ISO is the common international standard used for many years.   This includes common standards such as TS-16949  (2009), ISO-14001 (2004), & ISO-9000. But, like anything “Change” is inevitable, and by the end of next year, these certifications will be “Null and Void”. All companies that require these as part of their minimum customer requirements must apply for and get recertified with the following replacement certifications: ISO9001: 2015, IATF16949: 2016, ISO14001: 2015, & ISO13485: 2016.

In 2016, the industry began to discuss changes from ISO/TS, to the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) as the new standard. This effort was not to replace the current standards, but to enhance them even further. The goal of the IATF standard is to improve quality management, address defect prevention, and reduce waste even further. The addition of the IATF standards will enhance standards for companies that require more than one system of quality management.  The goal for implementation of the new IATF standard is September 2018.

Companies will have one chance to make the transition: during a transition audit that falls during the time of the company’s regularly scheduled surveillance or recertification audit. It’s recommended that companies wanting to make the transition familiarize their employees with the new guidelines, understand the differences in standards by conducting an organizational gap analysis, design and implement a plan for the transition, properly train all employees involved, and update their system to prove compliance with the new standards.

Risk mitigation is a prominent part of the new standard and will help to lessen the chances of failure. The new standard also clearly defines customer requirements vs. customer-specific requirements, with the latter being directly linked to clauses in the standards. Product safety and manufacturing feasibility will also be addressed, and is where PSS is directly linked. We will still offer our clients world-class service, with products that directly fall in line with the new standards and updates.

When it comes to custom metal progressive stampings, coiled springs, fourslide parts, wireforms and mechanical assemblies for global markets and OEMs, Perfection is already hard at work to adjust its systems and certifications to the new standard. In addition to the automotive industry, we also service a wide range of industries such as agriculture, construction, HVAC, plumbing, optical and everything in between.

To keep up to date with industry changes such as this one, or just to keep in touch, we invite you to follow our blog, connect with us on LinkedIn, like us on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter.

HVAC Industry Update Shows Positive Impacts

HVAC is something that is needed year round. Staying warm during the winter months is crucial while staying cool in the hot summer months is a luxury few are willing to live without, especially in places like our sweet home Chicago. With more green technology and smart homes and buildings being designed, HVAC is now a more innovative and progressive industry than ever before.

There are several factors driving the HVAC industry in today’s market, such as equipment, green technology, intelligent homes and buildings, and traditional heating and air conditioning products. All of these factors impacted an uptrend on the overall industry in 2016, with even more growth expected in 2017 and in future years.

Current revenue in the HVAC industry is $88 billion dollars, with an annual growth expected around 5%. The high prospects are due, in part, to the rebound from the recession and more construction going on nationwide including public and private buildings and personal residences. We’re always looking for ways to grow and adapt with our customers in order to best serve their needs, including those in the appliance and HVAC industry.

Here at Perfection Spring & Stamping Corp., we are able to supply the custom metal components that HVAC companies need for their systems. All of our high volume custom metal progressive stampings, coiled springs, fourslide parts, wireforms, and mechanical assemblies can be designed and engineered to your specifications. When it comes to service and support, we’re with you from design through production. To learn more about Perfection Spring & Stamping Corp we invite you to read more on our blog and follow us on Twitter.  We look forward to helping you with the right part for your HVAC products, and the increasing business the HVAC industry will bring to all ends.
