Progressive Stamping & Wire Forming of Steel Spring Loaded Bracket Assembly for the Automotive Industry
Working with a client in the automotive industry, Perfection Spring & Stamping Corp. developed a cost-effective solution to a problem with an existing trunk striker plate on a truck. The hinge system was experiencing unanticipated failures, so we used our progressive stamping, fourslide wire forming, and spring coiling capabilities to produce a better product using the original basic design. The essential mechanism on the new piece was a spring loaded pop-up striker plate, with a variable rate spring.
This compression spring was coiled from .075" thick music wire, to a length of 1.80". The base plate measured 5.5" x 3.0" x 3.0", and the wire form measured 7.0" in length. By using the original tooling, we were able to save our customer additional costs, over and above the cost savings of the new, more efficient part. The production run of 325,000 pieces was specially packaged on custom trays, and delivered to our customer in two locations: Michigan and Missouri for immediate integration with their automotive assembly operations.
