Where It All Began
The origins of the Fourslide machine date back to 1854, when E.J. Manville first developed a wire-forming device that would evolve into what we now know as the Fourslide or Multislide press. Early models, sold by the Manville Brothers Co. of Waterbury, Connecticut, executed the core functions we still use today: bending, forming, and stamping wire or strip material with speed, precision, and consistency.
What Does “Fourslide” Actually Mean?
The name “Fourslide” refers to the machine’s distinctive mechanical design. A slide is a tool-carrying mechanism that moves linearly to bend or shape material. The classic Fourslide machine features four opposing slides—arranged in a cross or “plus sign” configuration—each driving a forming tool toward the center, executing timed sequences to create complex geometries. These slides then retract to eject the finished part or allow for further operations.
Over time, additional mechanisms were integrated—cutoff units, part clamps, and ejection systems—bringing the typical machine’s functional “slide count” to six or seven. However, the original four slides remain the signature feature, and the name “Fourslide” has endured. As technology advanced, more complex configurations emerged, often referred to as Multislides, capable of even greater flexibility and part complexity.
Horizontal Pressing and Innovation
One distinctive element of traditional Fourslide presses is their horizontal orientation—a rare configuration in stamping. While this layout introduced unique challenges (such as gravity-complicated slug removal), it also allowed for a compact footprint and multi-directional tool access not possible with vertical presses. Over time, Fourslide presses integrated traditional stamping operations, blurring the lines between conventional punch presses and forming equipment—yet offering distinct advantages in precision and throughput.
